What if the things you live with — the walls, the objects, the marks on your skin — could exist on two layers at once?
This project started with a simple premise: the physical world already has a layer we can't see. AR doesn't add something that wasn't there — it reveals something that was waiting.
SVN AR Environment is an ongoing personal project to build exactly that layer — for the spaces I inhabit and the body I move through. It began with animated posters on apartment walls. It extended into a browser-based AR system that anyone can use without an app. And it is now reaching into the most personal surface of all: skin.
Three distinct builds. One continuous idea. A life with an XR layer on top of it.
Phase 01 — The Poster
The Living Walls installation: animated posters on apartment walls, brought to life through a Snapchat AR filter system built in Lens Studio — three image-tracking filters sorted by frame colour, distributed via QR codes. Fifteen animated targets. Live and in use.
Phase 02 — The App
The Snapchat version worked. But it came with a ceiling: platform dependency, limited content management, and a filter tied to someone else's infrastructure. The next question was obvious: what would this look like if I owned the entire stack?
AR Home Gallery is the answer — a browser-based AR web application built with MindAR.js, A-Frame, Three.js, and a Supabase backend. It tracks physical images using image recognition compiled live in the browser, overlays animated video directly onto the source print, and manages all content through a password-protected CMS. No app download. No Snapchat. No platform that can change the rules.
The system currently supports the full Living Walls installation and is the technical foundation everything built after it runs on — and it is still growing.
Phase 03 — The Skin
A wall holds an image. A tattoo is an image — drawn directly into the body, permanent, carried everywhere. It is one of the most personal forms of mark-making that exists. It also makes a remarkably precise AR tracking marker.
The tattoo extension of SVN AR Environment takes the same MindAR.js image tracking system that powers the gallery and applies it to a different kind of surface. Scan a tattoo, and what the camera sees is no longer static. The mark on the skin enters a second state — animated, reactive, alive.
I have tested this on my own tattoos. The tracking holds. The experience is something specific — not quite like AR on a poster, not quite like anything else. There is something different about pointing a camera at your own body and watching part of it move.
This feature is currently in active development. The system works. The full scope of what it becomes is still being determined.
